Chapter 14: Panel State Machine Runtime Environment
ASTi’s Panel State Machine Runtime Environment (PSMRE) represents the phase 1 launch of the
next generation ASTi Model Builder Visual (MBV) software product. Utilizing a highly-innova-
tive distributed synchronous realtime operating system, MBV opens the door to a vastly flexible
modeling environment. Running on the ASTi Telestra processing platform, the PSMRE provides
simulation modeling to drive “real” communication control panels. The PSMRE also controls the
routing and processing of data between panels, DACS systems, and the simulation host computer.
The runtime environment allows ASTi-developed state machines to be loaded and run, with
administration and functional visibility of system operation via RMS. All maintenance and sup-
port operations are handled through the RMS web-browser interface, avoiding the need for com-
plex and specialized software skills.
The USB-based interface devices provide the physical link between the processing platform and
the panel hardware. USB provides an ideal mechanism, offering high bandwidth, coupled with
simple plug-and-play installation. The ASTi RMS system again provides the operator with the
tools to map the installed hardware to the simulation “asset” model. Reference your system docu-
mentation for more information about the ASTi USB I/O device.
The PSMRE offers only a glimpse into the full potential of MBV. But, even in this first release,
the ability to run multiple instances of state machine objects, allow state machines to link to other
state machines, and to provide multiple external interfaces—both to other processing platforms
and to hardware interfaces—is fully implemented.
